Stock Bridges
Beams, boards and posts are pressure treated (tanalised); otherwise they will deteriorate quickly when sited over water. The bridge is then stained with Cuprinol 'Dark Oak' preservative, a natural colour that blends well within a garden.
To avoid movement, the posts are glued and screwed to the bridge beams before handrails are glued to the posts using dowels. On curved bridges, handrails are laminated (sample available). Finally, the boards are screwed to the beams. Screws are rustless, zinc plated with a 'brass effect' coating.
We keep various length boards in stock, as well as ramps to avoid a step up. Grooved boards are available at extra cost.
Special Orders
Please contact us if you want a quotation for a non-standard bridge. Curved bridges are limited to 21' (6.40 metres); flat bridges to 23'8" (7.20 metres). Ramp bridges are limited to 6'6" (1.98 metres) for constructional reasons.
Japanese bridges (including copies of originals) and Chinese bridges can be undertaken.
Bridges to take ride-on motor mowers are a speciality.
Site visits can sometimes be arranged.
Bridges can be stained or painted, or left for the customer to finish.
For special orders we ask for a deposit of 20% of the bridge price, with the balance payable on delivery.
Our History
In our 14 years of making bridges we have supplied them to golf courses, fishing lakes, borough councils, Millennium committees, schools and hotels but mainly to private gardens.
We have taken bridges all over the mainland, with trips to the Isle of Wight, The Orkneys, Isle of Arran (twice) and Republic of Ireland (twice). They have been delivered to shippers for despatch to many overseas destinations.
They have been sited over ponds, rivers, streams, ditches, gullies, culverts and flower beds as well as from balconies and patio doors. We have hauled bridges up cliffs, lowered them down cliffs, lifted them over fences and taken them through houses (even via a window).
We have been stung (wasps), bitten (Jack Russell, Doberman and Border Collie), immersed (over enthusiastic helper), sunburnt and frozen but it is still the best job in the world!
Potential customers are very welcome to visit our workshop. Please telephone beforehand for travel directions.
